NATO leaders are arriving in the Turkish capital of Ankara for a summit expected to shape the alliance's security priorities for years to come. The meeting comes at a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty. The war in Ukraine remains a central concern, while the recent conflict involving Iran has added fresh instability across the Middle East.
At the same time, many Western governments continue to debate how best to respond to China's expanding military, technological and economic influence. Another major issue dominating the agenda is defence spending.
The United States is pressing European allies to accelerate military investments and shoulder a larger share of NATO's security burden. Alliance members are expected to review progress toward higher defence spending targets and expanding defence-industrial production, amid continuing concerns over long-term military readiness. Support for Ukraine is also expected to feature prominently. Leaders are set to discuss continued military assistance, training programmes and air defence cooperation as Kyiv seeks stronger backing against ongoing Russian attacks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is among the invited participants at the summit.
