"Where did the fish go?": Europe grapples with worsening drought amid record-breaking heatwaves

A succession of record-breaking heatwaves in Europe this summer has caused a severe drought in parts of the continent, affecting major waterways such as the Danube and the Rhine.

Temperatures have soared above 40 degrees Celsius in several countries, prompting health warnings.

Authorities are grappling with the impacts, including drought-related disruptions and wildfires from France to the Balkans. Scientists warn that such events are becoming more frequent due to climate change.

"In my 55 years, I have never experienced the Drava river being this low, some old ships coming out like this, the old bridge down. The river has always been low, but something like this... and since the next couple of days the temperatures will be low, I mean high, it means that the water level will be even lower. My God, where did the fish go?" a Croatian man said.
