Puerto Rico is facing a growing water crisis as a severe drought forces authorities to begin rotating water rationing, leaving tens of thousands of people potentially without running water for up to 48 hours at a time.
The Carraizo Reservoir, a crucial source of water for the San Juan area, has fallen to critically low levels. Residents are now lining up with empty containers at water stations and natural springs as authorities bring in water trucks to help communities affected by the cuts. Dramatic drone footage shows large sections of the reservoir exposed as drought conditions intensify.
The rationing is expected to continue through at least the end of August, with seven municipalities, including San Juan, affected by the current phase. Puerto Rico experienced its driest July on record in the capital, while nearly 68% of the island is experiencing drought conditions.
Forecasters warn that the situation could worsen. NOAA expects a high probability of below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures from August through October as a strengthening El Niño pattern suppresses the tropical weather systems that normally bring much-needed rain.
