A University of Toronto professor has made history as the first scholar at a Canadian university to win the prestigious Fields Medal – the highest honour in mathematics.

Jacob Tsimerman was honoured, in part, for helping prove a problem that had stumped mathematicians for decades: the André–Oort conjecture.

The Fields medal is awarded every four years to recognize extraordinary research achievement by up to four mathematicians under the age of 40.

Now, Tsimerman is looking ahead to his next challenge, which will take him across the border to focus on artificial intelligence at OpenAI.
