Behind The News: Reporting from the Indonesian island where slavery never ended | AFP

AFP’s Jakarta Bureau Chief Eric Bernaudeau first heard of the Indonesian island of Sumba, where slavery still exists, during a conversation with a friend.

Alongside photographer Bay Ismoyo and video journalist Taris Iman he set out for the island, just two hours away from Bali, to document a reality few outsiders ever see.

Here they explain what it was like to enter such an unusual place, and how they went about getting testimony from both slaves and masters.
