A heavy police presence in Zimbabwe's capital appears to have deterred planned anti-government protests. Zimbabweans largely stayed away from demonstrations called in opposition to recent constitutional amendments signed into law earlier this month.
Opposition politicians say the changes, which delay national elections scheduled for 2028 by two years and extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa's rule, undermine democratic governance. Authorities deployed security forces across Harare ahead of the planned protests, with few demonstrators taking to the streets.
