West Asia is moving closer to a wider regional conflict as tensions spread from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea. Saudi Arabia has announced a new maritime defense alliance aimed at securing the strategically vital Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world's busiest shipping routes linking the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean.

The move comes after Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels declared a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia and claimed attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure and tankers. Reports also suggest Riyadh is preparing a major military offensive by land and sea to counter Houthi advances.
