This Week in Washington: Trump says Hamas agrees to disarm under new Gaza peace deal
From efforts to resolve major global conflicts to discussions on bilateral trade, the American capital was at the centre of this week’s major news stories.
On Thursday night U.S. President Donald Trump announced a breakthrough in the Israel-Hamas conflict, highlighting talks in Cairo have produced what he calls an “historic agreement” on the disarmament of Hamas.
Additionally in the region, Iran and the United States resumed strikes after a multi-day pause to hostilities while the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a closed-door meeting with President Trump. However, late in the week, U.S. Central Command said they did not carry out a strike.
Plus, another major world leader visited the White House Tuesday ahead of Sen. Lindsey Graham’s funeral. Volodymyr Zelenskyy pushed for support in producing advanced weapons, notably Patriot defence systems.
Finally, Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic Leblanc was in the U.S. capital for more trade meetings this week. Reggie Cecchini has more on what came from those meetings.
