Jason Arday has cancelled a series of events promoting his forthcoming memoir amid the ongoing controversy surrounding claims about his academic career and personal history.

The row has also put fresh focus on an open letter organised by lawyer Jolyon Maugham, which defended Mr Arday and criticised the allegations against him.

Mr Maugham has now defended his decision to support Mr Arday, saying he stands by the position he took at the time.
