Washington governor visits Spokane as wildfires burn hundreds of homes
Gov. Bob Ferguson arrived in Spokane on Sunday afternoon to meet with first responders and monitor a growing wildfire crisis after declaring a statewide emergency and imposing a burn ban amid record drought, strong winds and rapidly spreading fires.
About 5,000 homes have been evacuated as firefighters work to contain the fires, and authorities have opened an evacuation shelter at the Spokane Convention Center. Officials continue to report more than 600 structures damaged or destroyed, though they cannot yet break down how many are homes, businesses, schools or other buildings.
No deaths have been reported.
