Firefighters appear to have turned a corner in their battle against a massive wildfire in southern France, allowing tens of thousands of people to return home on Thursday.

As parts of France and Spain continue to burn, the Greek island of Crete is now experiencing a wildfire that’s forced thousands of residents and tourists to evacuate. Three Greek firefighters have died battling the blazes as high winds pushed the fire out of control near popular vacation spots.

France has received support from the EU to contain the wildfires raging across the southwest region.

“What we are witnessing is an unprecedented phenomenon, here in the heart of the European Union. Solidarity, as you know, is enshrined in our treaties, and here, it has been put into action more than ever,” EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib said.

According to EU climate experts, Europe is currently warming faster than anywhere else in the world, with temperatures rising at more than twice the global average.
