According to TASS, citing Il Fatto Quotidiano daily, since 2022, a total of 780,465 weapons have gone missing or been stolen, with 149,000 of these lost in just the first five months of 2026. Palermo’s Chief Prosecutor Maurizio de Lucia reported to the Italy’s national anti-mafia commission that a large portion of these weapons ends up on the European market, adding that the Italian mafia has shown interest in acquiring these arms.
The report says that European countries providing military aid to Ukraine prefer not to disclose the exact items sent to Kiev, which complicates police monitoring of the weapons’ movements.
