Google slammed with record US$1B+ fine by EU, a 1st under landmark rules

Google was hit with a record €890 million fine (more than US$1 billion) Thursday by the European Union (EU).

The ruling states Google broke digital antitrust regulations by setting up Google Play and its ubiquitous search engine to steer consumers towards its own services and apps to the detriment of competitors.

U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer took issue with the ruling, calling it “intellectual property theft” while accusing the EU of targeting competitive American companies.

Google, however, now has 60 days to comply with the European Commission’s orders treat rival competitors in a fair and non-discriminatory manner.
