Renowned historian Norman Davies joins Adam Jasser for a special edition of On the Record to discuss the future of Russia, the war in Ukraine, and Kyiv’s difficult relations with Poland amid the war.
Davies argues that the Russia is entering another period of decline, describing Vladimir Putin’s failed attempts to rebuild the country as an empire. He explains why he believes Russia has become increasingly dependent on China, and why Beijing, not Moscow, will ultimately shape Russia’s future. He also explains why today’s Russia is a “shadow of its former self” and how the war in Ukraine is dragging the country down.
Our guest also explains why it’s the worst time for historical disputes between Poland and Ukraine, which have recently been making headlines, to come to the surface. “Poland is right, but they’ve had 30 years to resolve this. The Ukrainians should not be attacked at their most vulnerable moment.” He adds that it will turn against Poland.
Drawing on decades of scholarship and historical perspective, Davies offers a wide-ranging analysis of the forces reshaping Europe and the international order.
“The EU is not collapsing,” he says. “Even when Trump interferes,” he adds.
