'Radical overhaul' and clear supply plan needed for future pandemics, finds COVID inquiry

The UK government wasted nearly two-thirds of the money it spent on protective equipment - almost £10bn - and had "perilous" stockpiles that were unprepared for the pandemic, the COVID-19 inquiry has found.

Inquiry chair Baroness Hallett said the waste of taxpayers' money during the outbreak was "vast" as she published her latest report from module five of the inquiry today.

A government spokesperson described the report as "sobering reading" and insisted it is "committed to learning the lessons needed from the COVID Inquiry to protect and prepare us for the future."
