Thousands of mourners gathered at the Imam Hussein Shrine in Karbala, Iraq, as the coffin of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was lowered and carried through the holy site. Emotional scenes unfolded as supporters tried to touch the coffin during the funeral procession before it was taken inside the shrine. The ceremonies in Najaf and Karbala are part of the final rites before Khamenei’s body is returned to Iran for burial.
