The US Central Command says it carried out what it calls defensive strikes on Iranian drone facilities over the weekend, targeting Qeshm Island and the city of Goruk.
CENTCOM says the strikes were in response to the downing of a US drone by Iranian forces in international waters.
Meanwhile, Iran's Revolutionary Guard says it targeted a US base that was used to launch an attack on Sirik Island, near the Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC did not specify the location of the US facility.
The claim comes as sirens were heard across Kuwait, with Kuwaiti media reporting that air defense systems are responding to missile and drone attacks.
The IRGC says it shot down an MQ-9 drone last Monday and forced other US aircraft out of Iranian airspace.
The back-and-forth has triggered mistrust between both sides while diplomacy continues behind closed doors.
Al Jazeera's Almigdad Alruhaid reports from Tehran, Iran.
