Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski told TVP World News Director and On the Record host Adam Jasser that Putin may resort to desperate measures, such as an escalation against a NATO country citing what he sees as a lack of access to credible information about Russia's situation. Is the Russian leader indeed so detached from reality?
“He’s quite rational in his willingness to escalate,” Fabrice Pothier, CEO of Rasmussen Global, told TVP World, but went on to say: “even though he’s pursuing, obviously, a completely distorted vision of where Russia’s place in Europe is.”
Pothier believes that Putin’s likeliest strategy would be attempting a diversion that would distract Europe from providing assistance to Ukraine in order to focus on its own defense, and advises that the best way to deter him from this is to send a clear message that Europe is determined to defend itself and push back against any provocation.
“I think this is to show him that he does not have a place to go. He cannot escalate horizontally. He just has to actually withdraw from Ukraine,” Pothier said.
