France responded by defending the U.N. human rights system and highlighting decades of close U.S.-French cooperation. The dispute followed the U.N. General Assembly's reappointment of Volker Türk as U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights with 144 votes. The United States, Israel, Russia, and Argentina voted against his second four-year term.
