The history of American strategic aviation during the early stages of the Cold War is defined by machines of uncompromising scale and ambition. The conceptual origins of the massive Convair B-36 Peacemaker date back to nineteen forty-one, well before the United States entered the Second World War. At that time, American military planners grappled with the terrifying possibility that Britain might fall to Nazi Germany, leaving the United States without a forward operating base in Europe. This dilemma prompted the creation of a heavy bomber capable of taking off from the American East Coast, crossing the Atlantic Ocean to deliver a payload, and returning to the mainland without the need for aerial refueling or an escort. The military requested designs from both Northrop and Consolidated to fulfill this incredible requirement. While Northrop pursued a radical flying wing design—resulting in the XB-35—Consolidated proposed a more traditional, yet massively scaled, aircraft. With a wingspan of roughly two hundred and thirty feet and powered by six pusher-configuration engines, the XB-36 prototype was officially ordered in November nineteen forty-one at a projected cost of eight hundred thousand dollars each.
Though the aircraft was not ready in time to see action in the Second World War, the initial XB-36 prototype finally took to the skies over Texas in August nineteen forty-six, piloted by Captain Beryl A. Erickson. The engineering hurdles of such a colossal machine quickly became apparent. The prototype was equipped with enormous one-hundred-inch single main tires, the largest ever constructed for an aircraft. However, this massive footprint restricted the aircraft to only three runways in the entire United States with pavement thick enough to support its weight. Convair's engineers brilliantly solved this by replacing the single tires with a four-wheel bogie cluster, distributing the incredible mass and allowing the bomber to operate from standard military runways.
As the geopolitical landscape shifted following the Berlin Blockade in nineteen forty-eight, the newly formed Strategic Air Command found itself in desperate need of an intercontinental deterrent. The B-36 was chosen to fill this vital role. This meticulously restored and colorized documentary explores the initial conceptual phases, the daunting engineering challenges, and the early flight tests that transformed the B-36 Peacemaker into the premier strategic asset of the early atomic age.
