EU proposes ‘associate member’ status for Canada amid US trade tensions

The European Commission has proposed a new ‘associate member’ status for Canada as the EU seeks to strengthen ties with Ottawa on trade and defence.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the designation could deepen cooperation with Canada, although the status does not currently exist in EU treaties and could face resistance from some member states.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is visiting France to discuss closer ties with Europe as Canada seeks new global partners following the collapse of trade talks with the United States and the imposition of 50% tariffs by US President Donald Trump.
