There have been protests in Kosovo after former President Hashim Thaci was sentenced to 25 years in prison by a tribunal in The Hague. He was convicted of war crimes committed while serving as a commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) during the 1998-99 Kosovo conflict, which was fought between Serbian forces and ethnic Albanian insurgents seeking independence from Serbia. In Kosovo, many ethnic Albanians regard Thaci as a hero of the independence struggle.
