'WE SUPPORT CANADA...': Carney Shocks Trump, Wins 'Open Support' From US Allies Amid Trade War
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed opening the door for Canada to become the European Union’s first “associate member,” creating a relationship the bloc has never previously offered another country. The proposed alliance could integrate Canada more deeply with Europe across defence production, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, energy, critical minerals, cyber security and the Arctic. However, associate membership is not yet defined under EU treaties and would not automatically provide Canada with voting rights, European Parliament representation or full access to the single market. Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada is not seeking conventional EU membership but wants a unique economic and security alliance. The proposal comes as Donald Trump’s tariffs and territorial rhetoric encourage Ottawa to reduce its dependence on the United States and build stronger ties with Europe.
