South Korea's expanded espionage law has officially taken effect, broadening the scope of espionage offenses beyond North Korea to include all foreign nations. Passed to safeguard strategic industries such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, displays, and batteries, the revised Criminal Act carries a minimum sentence of three years in prison for foreign technology leaks. The National Intelligence Service welcomed the reform, which closes a long-standing legal loophole that previously forced prosecutors to rely on lighter trade-secret penalties for non-North Korean espionage.
