French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are preparing a highly symbolic joint visit to Saint-Pierre-and-Miquelon after Donald Trump shared an AI-generated map placing Canada and several French territories beneath the American flag. The archipelago lies just 20 kilometres off Canada’s Atlantic coast but remains sovereign French territory. Macron and Carney are expected to use their appearance to defend national borders, sovereignty and the rule of law as Trump continues talking about acquiring Greenland and turning Canada into America’s 51st state. The map carries no legal authority. But the joint visit sends Washington an unmistakable message: Canada is not American, French territory is not negotiable, and sovereignty between allies cannot be reduced to an online provocation.
