Kolkata Importers Urge Dhaka To Lift Hilsa Ban As Quota Rises To 2,420 Tonnes Ahead Of Durga Puja

With Durga Puja approaching, Kolkata's Fish Importers' Association has written to Bangladesh's Commerce Minister asking it to finally lift the 2012 Hilsa export ban for good. Bangladesh has allowed limited, one-month export windows since 2019, but importers say that's never been enough to meet demand. Bangladesh raised its quota from 1,200 tonnes in 2025 to 2,420 tonnes this year, though actual shipments have historically fallen short of approved limits, leaving India's favourite fish still hard to come by.
