Named Ophiorrhiza assamensis, the rare herb belongs to a genus known for producing camptothecin, a compound that forms the foundation of several modern cancer medicines. Researchers have so far found the plant in only one small population, making its survival particularly vulnerable to deforestation, road expansion and changing land use. Scientists now want further studies to understand both its medicinal potential and conservation status. The discovery highlights how India’s biodiversity could still hold medically valuable species waiting to be identified.
