Trump sees 'good chance' to end Ukraine war as envoys head to Moscow

US President Donald Trump says there may be a "good chance" of ending the war in Ukraine, as envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner travel to Moscow and Kyiv this weekend, carrying a proposal that could include an initial ceasefire and security guarantees for Ukraine.

Al Jazeera's Kimberly Halkett notes Trump had promised to end the war within a day of taking office, but a year and a half in, the conflict remains at a stalemate even as the air war escalates. NATO countries are also concerned Russia may be widening the war beyond Ukraine's borders. Asked about German allegations that Russia was behind a drone attack on one of its airports, Trump denied Russian responsibility, saying Vladimir Putin is not looking to hit NATO territory.

Trump also addressed the US conflict with Iran, calling it "small potatoes" compared with the Vietnam War given the death toll so far, and said the US knows the movements of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, pointing to this week's strike on Larak Island launchers. Vice President JD Vance says talks to end that conflict will not begin until Iran stops firing on commercial ships.
