Germany’s Tiger I became one of the most recognisable heavy tanks of World War II, yet only 1,347 were ever produced. Its formidable armour and firepower came at the cost of enormous mechanical complexity, expensive manufacturing and intensive labour. While the Allies produced tens of thousands of Shermans and T-34s, Germany pursued battlefield superiority through fewer, heavier machines. Production of the Tiger I lasted just two years before factories shifted toward the even heavier Tiger II. So why did such a feared weapon remain comparatively rare on the battlefield?
