Russia is ramping up its use of the Banderol, also known as the S8000 - its new cheap, jet-powered drone-missile.

First spotted in spring 2025, the loitering munition is now being used in large-scale overnight attacks on Ukraine, with Kyiv saying several Banderols were intercepted alongside cruise missiles and Shaheds.

Cheaper than a cruise missile and carrying a smaller warhead, the Banderol is still hard to intercept. Russia's strategy is simple: force Ukraine to waste scarce and expensive air defence missiles to shoot down a low-cost weapon.
