India's private space industry has just entered one of the most technically demanding areas of rocket propulsion.
Astrobase Space Technologies has unveiled EVEREST — an 800 kN LOX–methane Full-Flow Staged Combustion (FFSC) rocket engine, designed for reusable launch vehicles.
But what exactly makes FFSC so difficult?
And why don't all rocket engines use it?
In this video, we break down the evolution of liquid rocket engine cycles — from the relatively simple Gas Generator (GG) cycle, to Staged Combustion, Oxidizer-Rich Staged Combustion (ORSC), Fuel-Rich Staged Combustion (FRSC) and finally Full-Flow Staged Combustion (FFSC).
We also look at some of the most important engines built around these architectures, including Merlin, Vikas, F-1, CE-20, RS-25 and other major propulsion systems.
Most importantly, we'll understand one fundamental question:
Why does FFSC offer such incredible performance — and why is it so brutally difficult to engineer?
From turbopumps and turbines to gas generators, preburners and combustion chambers, this is the story of how rocket engines evolved from relatively simple machines into some of the most sophisticated machines ever built.
