A major development is emerging around the Strait of Hormuz. Iran says it is “very close” to reaching an agreement with Oman on a temporary shipping route through the crucial waterway, potentially opening a path for maritime traffic while longer-term issues are negotiated.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said talks with Oman are focused on establishing a temporary route, with technical details and naval coordination already being worked out. But Tehran stressed that an agreement on the route would not automatically mean the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Araqchi said other conditions must also be addressed, including what Iran describes as U.S. violations of a memorandum of understanding and the need for compensation. The comments come amid heightened tensions surrounding one of the world's most important energy shipping routes.
The Strait of Hormuz is critical to global oil and energy markets, making any change to shipping access closely watched by governments, traders and businesses around the world. A U.S. official has also indicated that Washington expects an agreement between Iran and Oman soon that could allow normal oil traffic to resume.
