More than 300,000 people flee as France and Spain battle devastating wildfires

Firefighters in France and Spain are struggling to contain raging wildfires, which have forced more than 300,000 people to evacuate from their homes.

In southwestern France, 55,000 people evacuated overnight, as flames continued to move closer to the historic city of Bordeaux.

Bordeaux's Mayor Thomas Cazenave described the fire as being "at the gates of the metropolitan area."

Shifting winds, dry conditions and an intensifying heatwave have complicated efforts to limit the spread of the blaze that has burned 42,000 hectares - an area four times the size of Paris.

Hundreds of homes have been destroyed, and tourists have been urged not to come to the region by Gironde prefect Sophie Brocas.
