The Consolidated B-24 Liberator served as the heavy-hitting hammer of the 8th Air Force during the height of the Second World War. Designed with the famous, high-mounted Davis wing, this four-engine giant sliced through the air with an efficiency that allowed it to carry a heavier payload faster and farther than any other bomber in the American arsenal. Thanks to the immense industrial output at Willow Run, American factories produced one of these massive aircraft every single hour, fueling the relentless daylight precision bombing campaign over the European continent.
This comprehensively restored documentary explores the harrowing missions undertaken by the Second Bombardment Division. It details the legendary low-level strike on the oil refineries of Ploiești, Romania on August 1, 1943. Flying barely above the smokestacks through a deadly barrage of anti-aircraft fire, the Liberator crews dealt a paralyzing blow to the German war machine, costing the enemy one-fifth of their vital oil supply. The incredible bravery displayed during this inferno resulted in the awarding of four Congressional Medals of Honor.
As the bomber offensive expanded, the B-24s pushed deeper into hostile territory, attacking submarine pens at Saint-Nazaire, shipbuilding yards at Kiel, and aircraft factories in Gotha. The immense strategic pressure exerted by the 8th Air Force forced the Luftwaffe to withdraw fighters from the Russian and Mediterranean fronts in a desperate attempt to defend the skies over Germany.
