U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States remains committed to helping end the war in Ukraine following his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during the ASEAN meetings in Manila, Philippines.
Speaking to reporters after the talks, Rubio described the discussion as "good" and "frank," but declined to reveal specific details, saying diplomacy is most effective through private negotiations rather than public statements.
Rubio reiterated that President Donald Trump views the conflict as a "senseless war" and has made clear that the United States is prepared to play a constructive role in facilitating a peace agreement if the opportunity arises.
Responding to questions about Russia's claim that it urged the U.S. to stop supplying weapons to Ukraine, Rubio said there has been no change in U.S. policy, emphasizing that Washington continues to support Ukraine through NATO mechanisms while seeking a diplomatic solution that both Russia and Ukraine can accept.
Meanwhile, Russia's Foreign Ministry stated that Sergei Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow's willingness to pursue a political and diplomatic settlement during the meeting.
