Matthew Day says the NATO summit in Ankara confirmed that Europe and Canada are now taking much more responsibility for supporting Ukraine and strengthening the alliance, while the U.S. shifts toward a more limited but still essential role. He argues that President Trump’s attitude toward Volodymyr Zelenskyy has changed because Ukraine has proven it can seriously damage Russia’s war machine and has become a global leader in drone and missile technology that even the U.S. wants to learn from.
According to Day, Ukraine’s rapid innovation is exposing how slow and outdated Western defense procurement has become. He believes Ukraine may never officially join NATO, but its military expertise and defense partnerships are steadily weaving it into the alliance’s security architecture. In his view, the closer NATO and Europe work with Ukraine, the stronger they'll be in preparing for the long-term threat posed by Russia.
