The shadow of a conquering army had stretched across the entirety of Western Europe. With the fall of nations from Norway down to France, an occupying force commanded more than 100 million newly subjected citizens to sustain its war machine. Looking across the narrow waters of the English Channel, the chalk cliffs of Britain stood as the solitary obstacle remaining in the path of global domination. The mathematics of their defense were staggering. Across the waters, over 100 fully-equipped German divisions waited. On the island itself, the army salvaged from Dunkirk possessed barely enough equipment to arm a single modern division. One solitary tank was responsible for every 1,000 square miles of territory. Their skies were defended by an air force outnumbered 10 to one in both men and machines.
The German high command drafted a clear invasion blueprint. Phase one involved knocking out the Royal Air Force to gain control of the air. Phase two called for pulverizing the coastline with dive bombers. Phase three was the actual invasion using high-speed barges. On August 8th, 1940, the battle for Britain began. The RAF met the challenge by scattering their aircraft rather than bunching them on runways, saving countless planes from destruction during raids on Dover and Deal. By September 15th, 500 German bombers and Messerschmitt fighters roared over the English coast. That single day resulted in claims of 185 enemy aircraft shot down. Ultimately, the enemy lost 2,375 German planes and their crews. Dive deep into the tactics that saved an island in this fully colorized and restored 4K documentary.
