We are still living through the aftermath of Hurricane Lowell on Kaua‘i—without power, running water and internet at our home as our island works to recover.
Less than three weeks before the storm, our hale was filled with music, lei, laughter and aloha as our community gathered to celebrate the launch of Rise Up Babylon. We had worked so hard to create a beautiful space to come together. We didn't know how important that connection would soon become.
The hurricane changed everything.
In the days since, we've been clearing fallen trees, recovering food crops, conserving water, checking on neighbors, sharing what we have and finding new ways to live from the land.
The story of Rise Up Babylon has become even more deeply personal to me—its fires, floods and mudslide, communities cut off, and the sacredness of water.
When water no longer comes from the faucet, the teaching moves from the mind into the body.
Mní Wičhóni. Water is Life.
Ola i ka wai. Water is Life.
Maybe community isn't just about gathering when life is beautiful. We also carry one another when it isn't.
