Greenland security deal set to be signed at UN next week: Analysis

The US and Denmark are expected to sign a new security agreement over Greenland next week, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, though it still needs to pass the Danish parliament.

Donald Trump says the deal gives the US permanent, irreversible control over Greenland's security, and Washington will immediately expand its military presence, building on existing access at Pituffik Space Base. He calls it a historic win, something US presidents have sought for over a century, following months of tension that saw him offer to buy Greenland and threaten to invade it, prompting NATO to send extra troops to the territory.

Mikkel Olesen of the Danish Institute for International Studies says exact terms remain unclear, since most details so far come from the US side. He says the deal could end an 18-month crisis without Denmark or Greenland losing sovereignty, and that despite enormous US pressure, Copenhagen appears to have successfully resisted Washington's broader push to acquire Greenland outright.
