Every science book says it's a relic, a mammal that never got the memo to switch to live birth like the rest of us. But a new fossil discovery tells us this story might be backwards: our own branch of the family tree may have jumped from egg to live birth, back to egg, and then back to live birth again, but the platypus just didn't have time for that, and stayed eggy.
