A new pilot project is closing a section of road behind Trille des Bois Elementary School in Vanier to traffic twice a week to improve student safety during drop-off. The city partnered with EnviroCentre to manage the car-free zone using volunteers, and area councillor Stéphanie Plante notes that a second pilot project will begin at Hopewell Avenue Public School in October; the cost of living crisis is taking centre stage in the Ottawa municipal election as mayoral candidates share their proposals on property taxes and affordable housing. Candidate Jeff Leiper promised to build 1,500 new not-for-profit housing units per year and proposed a one per cent infrastructure levy; and a new French Catholic school in Orléans has been named in honour of beloved children's entertainer Suzanne Pinel, best known by her stage name Marie Soleil. CTV's Stefan Keyes reports that Pinel visited the school to give her blessing and interact with the new generation of francophone learners.
