The S 400 Triumf does not rely on a single interceptor because its strength comes from creating several overlapping layers of air defence. Its different missiles are designed to confront threats ranging from distant bombers and fighter aircraft to cruise missiles, precision weapons and low flying drones. Longer range interceptors allow the system to engage valuable targets far from the defended area, while smaller and more agile missiles provide protection against fast moving or nearby threats. Some of the compact interceptors can also be packed together in greater numbers, increasing the launcher’s capacity during complex attacks.
