Colombia protesters rally against new president who promises to crackdown on drugs, crime

Colombia’s new right-wing President Abelardo De La Espriella took office Friday, pledging a hard line on security, drug trafficking and illicit cocoa crops.

Opponents rallied in Cali and Barranquilla, with demonstrators thanking outgoing president Gustavo Petro and promising resistance to the new government.

Presidential candidate Ivan Cepeda accused De La Espriella of serving U.S. interests, saying he would be “an agent serving the interests of the United States.”

In a fiery speech, De La Espriella said "Cocoa has brought death, corruption and destruction," vowing to eradicate illicit crops.
