Farmers in Tiruchirappalli staged an unusual protest, burying themselves in sand on the banks of the Cauvery River to demand immediate release of water.

Led by farmers' leader Ayya Kannu, protesters accused Karnataka of treating Tamil Nadu as a "drainage state" and urged the Chief Minister to move the Supreme Court seeking Rs 1 lakh crore compensation for farmers.
