Charles E. Kelly was never supposed to become one of America’s greatest heroes. Before the war, he was a troublemaker from Pittsburgh with a reputation for ignoring orders, handling explosives recklessly, and constantly testing the Army’s patience. But everything changed during the brutal Allied invasion of Salerno in September 1943. After becoming separated from his unit, surviving German tanks, and wandering alone through enemy territory, Kelly volunteered for mission after mission as the battle for the beachhead descended into chaos.

At the desperate fight for Altavilla, he repeatedly crossed ground swept by machine guns, located enemy positions, destroyed German strongpoints, and ultimately defended a stone house that had become the last American stronghold on the hill.

As one weapon after another overheated or ran out of ammunition, Kelly simply grabbed another, firing Browning Automatic Rifles, Thompson submachine guns, bazookas, and even improvised mortar rounds while holding back repeated German assaults almost single-handedly. His actions allowed dozens of wounded Americans to escape before he volunteered to remain with the rear guard until the final breakout. Branded "Commando Kelly" and celebrated as the "One-Man Army," he became the first enlisted soldier of the 36th Infantry Division to receive the Medal of Honor after Salerno.
