Rachel Reeves is reportedly facing the sack if Andy Burnham topples Keir Starmer and takes control of Labour. Burnham’s allies are said to believe the Chancellor would not represent enough of a break from the current leadership, even though some around Reeves argue she would calm the markets during any transition. The row comes as pressure piles on Starmer from inside Cabinet and across the party, with Burnham arriving in Westminster after his Makerfield win and rivals already jockeying for top jobs. Labour’s civil war is now moving beyond Starmer’s future and into a full battle over who gets purged in the next bloodbath.
