An AI kill switch sounds simple, but shutting down an advanced system may involve far more than pressing one button. Frontier AI can operate across thousands of chips, servers and services spread across multiple data centres, making a single point of shutdown difficult. Cybersecurity experts also warn that an emergency control could itself become a target for attackers. Researchers are additionally studying how increasingly autonomous AI agents might respond when faced with shutdown or restrictions. Experts say emergency controls may therefore need to work alongside independent testing, monitoring and other safeguards.
