Under-pressure German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has described a state election result as a "disaster" but vowed to stay in office.
The far right AfD made strong gains, a result which means the chancellor's days "are probably numbered" according to Sky's security and defence analyst Michael Clarke.
It comes as Vladimir Putin's party won a record number of seats in Russia's election, which has been described as a "sham" by countries including the UK.
