Thai people are calling their own island a version of hell, and they're saying it every week on social media.
Phuket was built for a population of around 400,000. It now handles 13 million visitors a year, on top of nearly a million residents and workers already living there. The pipes can't keep up, the water gets shut off at night in Patong, and the island is sitting on close to 2 million tonnes of rubbish nobody can move.
Entire neighborhoods have turned into closed loops where a Russian family, a Chinese tour group or a French expat can spend years there without their money ever touching a Thai owned business. That's the part the arrival numbers hide.
In this video I explain how a Covid recovery plan turned into an accidental population crisis, why Thailand just blacklisted 169,000 foreigners and shut down a popular visa loophole, and why Vietnam might end up the real winner of Thailand's new immigration crackdown.
