On Sept 1, Vladimir Putin gave no sign that he was aware a Ukrainian counter-attack was taking place in the Lyman direction.

He claimed that Moscow’s forces had captured 14 settlements in a steady advance over the past month, he claimed, “including… as of yesterday, the town of Sviatohirsk.”

If Putin had been correct about its capture, it would have marked an important staging point in his goal to seize the entirety of the Donbas.

But Putin had been badly misled.
